We learned about hand tied metal springs in a seat in ‘The Difference a Good Seat Makes’ and the fluffy characteristics of fillings in ’What About the Pillow?’, but we’re now acquainting ourselves with the floor pillow, aka the notorious floor cushion.
Call it a cushion, floor pouf, or even a dog bed, the floor cushion and it’s pals actually have the same structural qualities. A sofa couch cushion is typically a piece of natural rubber latex foam, wrapped in cotton batting, and encased inside a cotton muslin liner. Technically, this seat cushion is reversible, the cushioning is the same on both sides, and would make a great floor cushion in a pinch. However, if couch forts are allowed in your home, then this may already be your practice.
Dog beds are typically a piece of foam encased in an outer fabric. Instead, consider differently cushioned sides like latex/buckwheat or feathers/crushed latex--a different side depending on your pooch's preference (yah, I love my dogs that much:). Since we pursue a non-toxic home for our human loves, human and furry alike, functional flexibility is an added incentive when making a quality purchase into green upholstery.
Just like the tiny house philosophy, less stuff and multifunctionability streamline tasks to free up time. Layered materials allow a custom combination that fit your lifestyle needs.
One of the main staples of green upholstery as explained in ‘Four Characteristics of Green Upholstery’, the degradability of the materials used are all the difference. Truly biodegradable materials eventually turn into earthy dirt, and the polar opposite of "petroleum-based plastic that simply breaks down into a fine sand or small pieces still cannot be digested by microorganisms".
Can’t help to notice that the best materials of green upholstery are mostly plant based and non-petroleum, and coincidentally are also non-fuming and a worthwhile investment for your health. Check em' out!
Natural Rubber Latex Foam
Non-toxic, non-petroleum, and non-fuming. Feels bouncy and spongy, yet enveloping like a cloud. Great for sitting long periods on the floor. Polyurethane foam is basically plastic and doesn’t let the body breathe, but thankfully latex will let your furry dude’s (your dog) body temperature to naturally adjust. Learn more about it’s plant origins here.
Adds a protective layer and shape to cushions. It's unbleached and renewable.
Certified organic and the hulls are nature’s answer to the "bean bag" feel. The feeling is weighty and solid, and would totally change the game of bean bag boxing. If you live in a house that allows couch forts, then you’re likely also looking to up your bean baggin’ skills.
Crushed Natural Latex
Ultimate shape and mobility like that bean baggy buckwheat, but in a spongy soft version. Excellent choice if tossing one’s self onto a floor cushion is common practice. The right amount of filling could be a great match!
Excellent insulating and cozy cushioning properties. Classic, squishy comfort. This is the only animal based material we offer, and kapok can achieve the same feeling. If a plant version is available, then why not help a duck? But, if you live in a cold climate your canine buddy might like the insulating help.
